Trans fats are created when you make a liquid fat into a solid fat.Think margarine made from soybean or corn oil. Years ago, scientists thought these artificially hardened fats would be better for you than artery-clogging butter or lard. They also take longer to spoil. But it turns out that making liquid fats solid makes them just as bad for your arteries as saturated fat. Trans fats raise bad cholesterol, which in turn hardens and blocks your arteries, causing heart attacks and strokes.
